Help support those in need with the contents of your wardrobe

« Back to News // Wednesday, 1st February 2017

Every Monday from 10am-3pm Central Hall is the home to Basics Bank’s Clothes Bank, which provides items of clothing to those in need throughout Southampton.

Run by Southampton City Mission, Basic Bank provides free emergency food and clothing to thousands of people in need throughout the community each year.

In 2015 8,566 people were fed and 1,721 people were clothed with the help of Basic Bank’s food and clothing banks.

It works as a voucher system, where Referral Agents determine the appropriate service for their users. Doctors, social workers, health visitors, community workers, shelters, charities and many others use the vouchers as a way to offer help to those they work with.

Central Hall provides the facilities to collect and distribute items of clothing each week. We are the only venue within Southampton currently used by Basic Banks to store and distribute the clothing, to ensure a large collection of clothes is generated and therefore more of a choice is given to its users each week. The items of clothing are then set out in rails and cabinets to deliver more of a shopping style experience and allow service users to browse through each section at their own leisure - with 4x outfits per person provided.

Donations are always welcome and much needed to help Basic Banks continue with the work they are doing throughout our community. You can donate any clean and good condition items of clothing directly to reception at Central Hall during weekday opening hours, either by placing them in one of our collection bins or handing them to a member of staff.

Basics Bank are always in need of more men’s clothes, particularly jeans and hard wearing trousers and shoes, as well as older children/teenage clothes for boys and girls. Jumpers, waterproof coats and shoes are also very useful from the beginning of Autumn onwards, as the weather begins to get cold. If you are donating shoes, please tie the pair together to avoid them being separated during transit.

You can find out more about the kind of things to donate on the Southampton City Mission website
