Feeling Festive at Central Hall

Southampton Choral Society kicked off the Christmas season with a beautiful carol performance

Our Christmas trees were up; fairy lights turned on and mince pies on sale in the coffee shop. But we knew Central Hall needed a little extra something to really get in the festive spirit.

Then – with the melodic opening lines of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ by the impressive Southampton Choral Society – we found it.

The choir treated us to an outstanding night of classic Christmas carols accompanied by the Royal Marines Association Band. With over 130 trained singers paired with the brass and wind concert musicians, the stunning sounds created an instantly festive atmosphere.

Southampton Choral Society has been performing at Central Hall for over three years. Formerly Southampton Choral Union, the group was formed in 1943 with a collaboration of free local church choirs. Over the years, they attracted leading soloists and increasingly large numbers of members – accumulating to the impressive collection of talent they boast today.

The choir aims to make singing fun and enjoyable, using their skills to perform at community-focused events such as Remembrance Services and Titanic memorial ceremonies.

With a similar passion for community events, the Royal Marines Association Concert Band was formed in April 2006. Performing two public concerts a month, they’re the nation’s most sought-after military band and have accompanied a range of outstanding choir groups.

Our Main Hall was packed with an audience who were as moved by the beautiful Christmas classics as we were. Festive hot drinks from our coffee shop also added a touch of seasonal warmth.

The event was the perfect way to start our Christmas season at Central Hall. We had a great time hosting Southampton Choral Society and the Royal Marines Association Concert Band and we hope to welcome them back next year.
